Nation-Building and Identity Discourse in Ukraine and Switzerland
June 18- 20, 2008
This Research Conference is part of a project on exchange and coordination of Cultural Studies between and in Switzerland and Ukraine. The aim of this cooperation project is to establish a sustainable link between Swiss scholars who study Eastern Europe and Ukrainian Cultural Studies scholars. Thus, the project revolves around a reciprocal exchange: the Swiss scholars of Eastern Europe will become familiar with the specific features of Ukrainian Cultural Studies, and the Ukrainian scholars will gain additional insight into specifically West European debates.
The goal of this first conference was to foster communication on common Cultural Studies projects, to discuss possible theory backgrounds and to develop international research projects. In January 2009 a second conference will be held in St. Gallen. This conference will especially address the possibilities of future cooperative work and the possible establishment of an Institute for Advanced Studies in Lviv.
This Conference was realized by the Division for Culture and Society of Russia at the University of St. Gallen, the Institute of History of the Ukrainian Academy of Science in Kyiv, and the University of Lviv, with the participation of the Universities of Fribourg, Lausanne and Geneva as well as the Swiss Eastern European Library. It was supported by the Swiss State Secretariat for Education and Research (SER).
