A native of Lwow, Majer Balaban (1877–1942) was a founder of modern Polish Jewish historiography. This lecture will follow his life and work in the context of local Jewish history in Lviv and in Galicia. In 1904, he completed his doctoral dissertation on Jews in Lviv at the turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. He continued to publish extensively on the history of Jewish institutions and communities in Galicia. Last but not least, he remained interested in the work of historians working in Lviv both before and after the First World War.
The lecture was a part of the program "Jewish Days at the City Hall: Common Heritage and Responsibility".
