Presentation of the Book "Ancient Carpentry Structures of the Latin Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lviv"
14.4.2025, 17:00
Conference Room of the Center for Urban History
The Center for Urban History and the National Institute of Polish Cultural Heritage Abroad Polonika invite you to a meeting with Maciej Warchoł, author of the book "Dawne konstrukcje ciesielskie łacińskiej archikatedry pw. Wniebowzięcia NMP we Lwowie" ("Ancient Carpentry Structures of the Latin Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lviv").
Maciej Warhoł's book, published by the Polonika Institute, focuses, according to the author, on the heritage of technical thought – knowledge about carpentry structures with a centuries-old tradition. Historical carpentry structures of roof forms, bell structures, or wooden helmets of towers are an important element of the value of historical and cultural monuments.
The Lviv Cathedral is the first major church in the historical and modern Rzeczpospolita to have complete documentation of all roof carpentry structures. Other Polish cathedrals, including those in Gniezno, Poznan, Wrocław, and Warsaw, were burned as a result of deliberate actions by either the German army in Warsaw or the Red Army in Gniezno and Wrocław, and their structures were not researched and documented in time.
In his research, Maciej Warhoł covers the roof structures of the Lviv Cathedral, from the nave and presbytery through the side chapels to the incredible helmet structure of the eighteenth-century north tower. Thus, the publication is aimed at restorers, researchers, and scholars, and aims to draw attention to an important component of an architectural work that has not only historical and monumental, but also functional value.
The book presentation will be joined by:
- Maciej Warhoł, architectural conservator, author of the book;
- Prof. Oleh Rybchynsky, Doctor of Architecture, Associate Professor at Lviv Polytechnic National University;
- the meeting will be moderated by Dr. Dr. Karol Gutmayer, restorer, art historian, Polonika Institute.
The event will be held in Polish, with simultaneous translation into Ukrainian.
