Center for Urban History will host a discussion "Ukrainian Contexts of Jewish Studies," which will be about the book "Jews in the Ethnic Mosaic of Ukrainian Lands" (Kharkiv, 2015).

The conversation will focus on the different experiences of the development of Jewish studies and the challenges they pose to the Ukrainian academic community as well as the contexts and categories Jewish history in Ukraine should be considered in.

The participants will also discuss how the idea "Ukrainian-Jewish friendship," which has been actively circulated in the media and political rhetoric, influences the study and understanding of the shared past of these peoples.

The publication "Jews in the Ethnic Mosaic of Ukrainian Lands," which will be presented during the discussion, combines the research of young scholars and, to some extent, thematically and contextually shows the current state in of these studies in Ukraine.

Participants:

Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern 

Professor of Jewish Studies and Jewish History at Northwestern University in Chicago. Petrovsky-Shtern taught at various institutions, including the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, University of Jerusalem, and Harvard. He is the author of more than a hundred academic papers and six books.

Vladyslava Moskalets -

Coordinator of the Jewish Studies Program and lecturer at the Ukrainian Catholic University. Doctorate at Jagiellonian University.

Artem Kharchenko 

Associate Professor of Political History of Ukraine at the KhPI National University, co-founder and project coordinator at the Center for the Study of Interethnic Relations in Eastern Europe in Kharkiv.
