Sex in the Cities: Prostitution, White Slaving, and Sexual Minorities in Eastern and Central Europe

The conference was organized in the cooperation with the Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies of the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. More than 20 researchers from different countries took part in the conference. They spoke about social control and sexuality in the cities of Eastern and Central Europe in the nineteenth-twentieth centuries with a special focus on the discourses of the "deviant." Topics of the conference included homosexuality, prostitution, sex crimes and white slaving. Special attention was paid to the issue of the trade of women in modern Ukraine.
The conference was co-sponsored by the Center for Austrian Studies, University of Minnesota.
