Historian, Candidate of History (2004), Associate Professor at the Department of History of the National University "Kyiv Mohyla Academy". The Candidate thesis was on the analysis of policy of countries in Central Europe as to Ukrainian Issue in 1919/23 (as illustrated by Poland and Czechoslovakia). While on the research scholarship in the USA, as part of the Fulbright Faculty Development Program in 2005/06, (the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), she explored the shaping of discourse of Central Europe and the impact of policy of identities on EU integration processes in the Central European countries. She worked in a Diplomatic Academy in 2006/2007 academic year. Since 2006, she has been teaching at the National University of "Kyiv Mohyla Academy." She applied her experience of stay in the USA to establish a Center for Polish and European Studies of the NaUKMA she headed in 2007/13, and she has been participating in its activities until present.

At the Center for Urban History, Olena Betlii is engaged into implementation of a research project "Cities, Wars, and reconstructions in East Europe in the 20 th Century."

Her research focus includes social history of Kyiv during the First World War and the Revolution; discourse practices in the European environment; policy of identities in the context of EU integration processes. She lectures courses on urban studies, on mental maps of European space, and the history of CEE countries of 1989-2007.
