Mayors of Lviv

Center for Urban History hosted a presentation of the research project "Lviv’s Mayors: From the End of the Thirteenth Century to the Present."

The project is the result of the work of a group of historians from the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, the Center for Urban History, the Lviv branch of the Hrushevsky Institute of Ukrainian Archeology and Source Studies, and the Krypyakevych Institute of Ukrainian Studies. The purpose of the project is to compile a complete list of Lviv’s leaders from the first historical information about the city in the thirteenth century to the present, and to create a digital database on the Center for Urban History’s Lviv Interactive page. The idea was to have a resource for the study of management practices in Lviv, basing it on the role of individuals and considering the diversity and, at the same time, the integrity of the historical development.

The project is implemented with financial assistance from the Lviv City Council’s Social and Cultural Grants Program.

The collected and published materials only outline the research field and indicate its main structural elements. The result is a full list, organized chronologically from the late thirteenth to the early twenty-first century, of Lviv's overlords, bailiffs/mayors, presidents, municipality heads, and mayors. Information about each person may include (depending on the period) information about dates of birth and death, place of birth and burial, period in office, as well as management experience, and periods of major social and political activities. Along with the text, there will is a visual part with portraits, engravings, medallions, commemorative plates, tombstones, epitaphs, autographs, and buildings where the leaders lived.

The purpose of these materials is to promote Lviv as an urban center, which for centuries has encountered and interacted with different historical, legal, and cultural traditions.
