Eastman Museum

In October this year, the George Eastman Museum launched a new platform that allows public online access to more than a quarter of a million photographic objects from its world-class collections.

"Online access to our extensive collections will transform the public’s understanding of our holdings and facilitate new forms of collaboration with creators, curators, scholars, and collectors. Whether you are conducting research on a particular subject or simply interested in seeing what works we have by your favorite photographer, you can now do so much more easily," say the museum representatives.

The photography collection at the George Eastman Museum comprises over 400,000 photographic objects. Not everything in the collection is currently available online, but the authors of the project promise to add new objects to the database on a regular basis. In the near future, the first digitized films from the museum’s moving image collection will also be available online.

The George Eastman Museum was opened in 1949 on the estate of the founder of Kodak with the objective of collecting, preserving, and popularizing the history of photography and film. The museum boasts the world’s largest collection of daguerreotypes. It is also famous for its collections of the 19th century photography as well as vast holdings of films and works by such masters as Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Elliott Erwitt, and Sebastião Salgado.
