Description: |
A view of the St. George Cathedral in winter. The St. George Cathedral is the chief Greek Catholic (Ukrainian Catholic, Uniate) temple of Lviv. The present-day building of the Cathedral was constructed in 1744-1761 by the architect Bernardo Meretini (Merderer) at the cost of Bishops Athanasius and Leo Sheptytskyi. The attic of the church is crowned by a sculpted figure of St. George the Dragon-Slayer by Johann Georg Pinsel. Famous Lviv artists like Klemens Fesinger, Luka Dolynskyi, Jerzy Radziwill and Mykhailo Filevych took part in decorating the church. The Cathedral's crypt became the final resting place of Greek Catholic Methropolitans of Lviv, including Cardinal Sylvestr Sembratovych, Archbishop Andrei Sheptytskyi, Cardinal Yosyf Slipyi, Cardinal Myroslav Ivan Liubachivskyi. Walls and monastery buildings were erected around the cathedral. |
