Description: |
This site has changed significantly since the time when the photograph was taken. It shows the monument to Franciszek Smolka executed by the sculptor Tadeusz Blotnitcki on the site of an old well. F. Smolka was a long-time deputy of Lviv in the Austrian parliament and initiated the erection of the Mound commemorating the Union of Lublin. The monument shows F. Smolka delivering a speech in the parliament. It embellished the site from 1913 until 1946 whereas the square itself which originally also carried the politician’s name was later renamed into General P. Prigorenko Square. Where Smolka’s statue used to stand we can nowadays find a monument to St. George and the Dragon, executed in 1999 after a project of the sculptors V. and A. Sukhorski. An interesting detail of the photograph should be mentioned: on the right bottom corner there is a doorplate reading “Warszawa” (Warsaw). It refers to a café which existed from 1910 in the house №3 right behind the monument to Smolka. |
