Kopernyka Street begins at Mitskevycha Square and Svobody Boulevard. It was once known as Sokilnytska/Sokolnicka Road, later as Szeroka Street, while its upper part was named św. Łazarza. During the 1871 campaign of re-naming streets and re-numbering buildings, the entire street was renamed in honor of Nicholas Copernicus (Kopernik in Polish, Kopernyk in Ukrainian). In 1894 electric tram tracks were laid in the street, going from the tram depot at the end of the street to the Main Post Office. Tram No. 12 ran in the upper part of Kopernyka Street on its way through downtown Lviv to the Castle Hill up to March 1970. In 1839 Archduke Franz Karl Joseph Habsburg (1802-1878), father to future Emperor Francis Joseph I, stayed under No. 20. In 1899-1900, Alfred Zachariewicz and Jan Lewiński built the famous Mikolasz Passage in 1 Kopernyka St.
